Chapter 24

Samantha

I collapse on my bed that night, completely and utterly exhausted. It was an intense day. First, there was the healing with Sandra and then the run-in with Maverick. I still can’t believe he came here. Things didn’t really end all that well with him. I think I convinced him to leave her alone for now. But I’m not really sure. I groan and roll over. There’s no way I’m going to sleep tonight.

The next morning, I find myself dragging. I dig through my tea stash that Wyatt has been faithfully sending me. After making a cup of tea, I sit at my breakfast nook for a few minutes and write out my itinerary for the day. I have appointments scheduled with each of my pregnant she-wolves, so I’ll wait to do another healing session with Sandra until tonight. Once I’m done, I head to the shower, hoping to wake myself up.

After my shower, I feel more human. With my hair wrapped in a towel, I head to the sink. When I look in the mirror, I startle. I blink and then lean closer to the mirror. My eyes. They’re greener than they usually are, and that’s saying a lot because my eyes have never gone back to normal after what happened to me with the vampires. I lean close again, looking for any signs of the swirling that I saw—the swirling they did before Sage healed me. When I don’t see anything, I pull back. I look down at my hands; they’re shaking. I take several steadying breaths. It’s nothing. Just a reflection of the mirror. I turn away and finish getting ready without looking in the mirror again.

Audrey meets with me first after breakfast. “How are you feeling?” I ask once she gets settled on the exam table.

“Perfect.”

Her answer surprises me. “No morning sickness? No queasiness?”

“Nope.”

“That’s great. You’re one of the lucky ones,” I tell her with a smile.

“I guess.”

We don’t say anything to each other after that aside from me telling what I’m doing to her each step of the way. She’s not a terrible person, per say; we just don’t really click. “Everything looks good,” I tell her, standing back from the table. “Any questions for me?”

“Yes. When is the doctor from your pack coming back?”

Her question takes me by surprise. “He probably won’t come until the end, when you’re ready to deliver.” When she doesn’t look pleased with my answer, I add, “But I check in with him often. He’s apprised of everything that goes on.”

She nods. “Good.”

“All right. I’ll see you in a few days.”

Without another word, she leaves the room. I watch her go and feel defeat; she’s never going to see me as a real healer. The door opens a few minutes later, and Brandi walks in. Toby, her mate follows her in. “I hope it’s okay I brought him along,” she says quietly.

“Of course, he’s always welcome,” I tell her with a wide smile. “Brandi, go ahead and hop up on the table.
